Reintroducing our Pioneering Women

Join us for our first ‘Reintroducing our Pioneering Women’ event.

The Society’s ‘Pioneering Women’ project aims to shine a light on the lives, careers and legacies of some of our early female members. This first event will focus on sculptor Anne Crawford Acheson FRBS (1882-1962). Acheson was one of our earliest female members, becoming a member in 1923, and the first woman to be elected a Fellow, in 1938.

During the First World War, she volunteered for the Surgical Requisites Association. Here, she developed a technique for setting broken bones using Plaster of Paris: a technique still used today. For her efforts, she was awarded a CBE in 1919.

Our Research Curator will be in conversation with Acheson’s great niece Virginia Ironside, and there will also be an opportunity to see archive material relating to Acheson and the other early Pioneering Women.
