Awakenings at Wick is a two-week long residency at Wick, Somerset. It is a self-directed self-catered artist residency programme based in Somerset and all applicants must come with the understanding that they need to work independently.

About the residency

The residency period is two weeks - Monday 15 to Sunday 28 June 2026.

Complimentary accommodation in a shared space (individual room) is provided but please note the successful artist will be responsible for their own food and supplies. 

A travel bursary of £150 is available (receipts must be provided). 

There are a variety of spaces to choose from in terms of studio space, one indoors and one outdoors. The successful artist can choose a space most suitable for them. 

This is a self-directed, self-catered programme with a maximum of five artists in any given residency period, with one artist per room. We have created a unique environment that brings artists and aspiring artists together in a respectful shared space. We welcome all mediums, all we ask is that you bring with you the tools you require to create.

Eligibility

Applications are welcomed from all Royal Society of Sculptors members and fellows provided they have not been awarded or participated in a Society residency in the 12 months prior to the applications opening. Please note that for your application to be accepted, your annual membership fee must be paid in full by the submission deadline or an existing quarterly direct debit be in place.

I create abstract sculpture with a long-term, immersive engagement with materials. I studied sculpture at Wimbledon School of Art and went on to the Advanced Course at St. Martin’s School of Art. There was a strong figurative reference to my student training but over time I moved away from anatomy towards full abstraction but movement and gesture are still central concerns.

I am delighted to have been offered the opportunity to work in such a remarkable setting. It is especially valuable to have an extended period of time dedicated entirely to my practice, without distraction.

While I do not have a fixed plan for a specific sculpture at this stage, following a busy spring of exhibitions I am very much looking forward to the space this residency offers—to reflect, to initiate new ideas, and to consider the direction and development of future work.
