About the prize

We are delighted to invite applications from our Royal Society of Sculptors Members and Fellows for the Crafts on Peel x Royal Society of Sculptors Material Exchange Residency.

Organised in partnership with Crafts on Peel, a Hong Kong-based charitable foundation to revive, reinterpret and perpetuate traditional craftsmanship, this unique residency offers sculptors the opportunity to collaborate closely with Hong Kong makers and artisans through hands-on exchange, shared making, and co-creation.

For the 2027 edition, the programme will focus on bamboo in collaboration with Breakthrough Art Studio, led by natural fibres artists Barnard Chan and Cecilia Lai.

Since 2015, the studio has explored the relationship between traditional textile craft and contemporary art, drawing on material cultures across Southeast Asia and working extensively with natural materials and community-based making practices.

This is an exciting opportunity for sculptors interested in learning about Asia-centric craft techniques and having a cultural immersion experience in Hong Kong. 

The residency and exchange programme is highly structured and rewarding, particularly to those enthusiastic about documenting their process in depth.

Neus Torres Tamarit MRSS

Neus Torres Tamarit MRSS is a multimedia artist and curator exploring art, science, technology, and AI. Originally from Riola (Valencia, Spain), she lives and works in London. She studied Fine Arts in Spain, developing a multidisciplinary approach with a focus on sculpture and multimedia installations. In 2017, she completed an MA in Art and Science at Central Saint Martins, transitioning her practice toward genetics, evolution, environment, artificial intelligence and mental health. As co-founder of Phenotypica (Art & Science), Neus has collaborated with leading institutions including The Royal Society, The Francis Crick Institute, University College London, The National Gallery X, and Tate Modern.


I’m thrilled to have been selected for the Crafts on Peel Material Exchange Residency, working with Breakthrough Art Studio on bamboo and cultural craft exchange. I grew up between Valencia and Alicante, where objects made from wicker, esparto, palm and bamboo are common in everyday life. Material experimentation is central to my practice, from bioplastic, acrylic and textiles to digital installations. I can’t wait to exchange ideas and techniques with Barnard and Cecilia, and to travel to Hong Kong to collaborate on a project with bamboo, a material I have never worked with before!
