Our Sculptors Exhibitions
An exhibition featuring the 18th-century cartographic masterpiece, the Cassini Map, plus the work of 5 contemporary artists that reflect on territory and mapping. I'm delighted to be showing Europa in this stunning, stately environment of the Hôtel de Soubise alongside esteemed French artists Cathryn Boch, Georges Rousse, Mathieu Pernot & Maris Moreau.
The evocative nature of archives and maps and their power to fascinate make them a subject embraced by artists. The National Archives regularly presents works that connect with art and history. Exhibitions like this foster dialogue on shared themes, allowing for multifaceted perspectives, encouraging a deeper understanding and appreciation of cultural heritage.
Europa reflects Susan’s time spent in France and questions recent historic events in Europe, including the war in Ukraine, Brexit, and mass migration. Europa is a time traveller looking out to what? Standing in seawater and carrying a rucksack, she bears the weight of an unpredictable future. Meticulously crafted and subtly revealing, she is both beautiful and full of foreboding.
Hôtel de Soubise, Musée des Archives nationales, Le Marais, Paris, FR, until 1st February 2027.
