Biography

‘Stephanie Douet is constantly distracted from her art practise by her superficial and impulsive readings of history and science. Marvels and wonders of the past, the natural world and oddities of human behaviour are unreadably channelled into her sculptures, paintings and drawings; Commedia dell’Arte, the British Raj, the Gaze, historic optical instruments, spectacle, political cariacature  and German Romanticism make mostly unrecognisable appearances in her work.

She reads in order to feel the unfamiliarity of the world and, like Phillip Guston,  paints what she want to see.  If she were not a sucker for the cheap one-liner and could resist bright colours and fashion she would be a conceptual artist.’
