Biography

I work as a painter and sculptress in Essex.  The urban environment with its dramatic roads and buildings is my main inspiration.  Most of my work begins by drawing places. This leads to all sorts of ideas that can move far from their inspiration,  lead as they are by an exploration of form and materials.

It is important to me to work directly with different materials.  I do not limit myself to any one medium, but make different series of work based on the possibilities I find in cast concrete, cardboard, welded steel and perspex.

My sculptures and you could say my paintings too, are constructed or assembled in nature.  I am a constructor rather than a carver or moulder.  In this regard my work shares something of its character with the urban architecture which inspires it, as well as, a more abstract motivation peculiar to each piece.

I have worked as an artist for over thirty years, making work for galleries, in education and for a range of public commissions.  This has included various series of built up paintings;  sculptures and constructions for galleries in different materials and at different scales;  and a number of larger scale public sculptures in concrete and welded steel.  All of my career I have also been a visiting artist in schools and galleries, specialising in cardboard constructions.
