Biography

Working as a full-time sculptor, Marina Láscaris’ practice stems from two main sources; Greece, her birthplace and Mexico where she has been living since 1976.  Her work is abstract in its language, and organic in its shapes.  Mythology is her underlying source of inspiration, translating a strong interest in nature and the understanding of mankind throughout history.  Marina Láscaris is entirely self-taught.  She models and carves her materials which allows her to work in a variety of mediums including wood, marble and bronze. Her sculptures convey a true equilibrium, in their shape, materiality and composition, a genuine reflection on the person she is and on her sense of respect towards nature and the animal kingdom (or towards our planet’s fauna and flora?).  What is most striking in her work is its tactile quality, often amplified by the combination of bronze with wood or bronze with marble, contrasting yet complimentary, adding to the balanced sensuousness of her pieces. Traditional in its techniques, her practice assertively contributes to today’s dialogue in contemporary sculpture, never compromising neither meaning nor feel.
