Biography
Mandeep Dillon works across disciplines to explore notions of entropy, creating ephemeral sculptures that probe the transient physicality of human and more-than-human beings. The works reflect a conflict about occupying space in a crowded world, making temporality integral to the objects; often photographs and video are the only lasting evidence of their existence.
Made primarily from inflatables, the forms are inherently fragile, their stability dependent on a delicate balance between the inner and outer pressure on their gossamer skins. Responding to subtle environmental changes, their swollen buoyancy suggests imminent collapse. Orbs that dangle or wobble precariously may appear as parodies of entrails or as comedic characters. When situated in a landscape, they present as alien fruits or topiary.
Experiencing something both abstract and visceral, the onlooker’s presence may trigger a kinetic reaction and an awareness of their embodied relationship with the sculpture.
