Biography
London based glass artist Kate Maestri works to commission on a wide range of public art projects throughout the UK and internationally. Working at the intersection of art and architecture her work explores the possibilities of suspended colour, form and light. At whatever scale, whether for exhibition, a public space or part of the structure of a building, her work considers these same essential elements.
Working in collaboration with architects and engineers, she designs site-specific installations that are an integral part of the building. Her artworks fuse modern technology with traditional, mouth-blown stained glass and screen-printed ceramic enamels to produce the luminous colours that characterise her work.
Alongside her architectural installations Maestri also works on a smaller scale. Utilising the rich depth of jewel like hues available in mouth-blown stained glass she creates three-dimensional glass wall sculptures, cantilevered from the wall, creating an illusion of floating colour.
Major commissions during her two decades of practice include a 200-metre curved glass balustrade for the Sage concert hall in Gateshead with architects Foster + Partners, a five-storey wall for Arlanda Airport in Stockholm, and a stained glass walkway for the concourse of Dortmund railway station in Germany. Her most recent exhibition, ‘Colours in Architecture’ a solo show of her glass wall sculpture, was at the London gallery Contemporary Applied Arts.
