Biography

Karen Tang (b. London 1978) exhibits internationally in galleries and the public realm. Venues include: Bloomberg Space, Jerwood Space, Ambika P3, Vestfossen Kunstlaboratorium, l'étrangère, Guest Projects, CFCCA, Pumphouse Gallery and The Collection Museum. Tang’s sculptures have been commissioned by The Economist/Contemporary Art Society, The National Trust, VITRINE, South London Gallery, Ealing Council and private collections. Tang left the Slade 2004 with an MFA(Distinction) in Sculpture. Represented by l'étrangère gallery.
Tang’s oeuvre references pop-culture, sci-fi and city life. Works present surprising, humorous, structural and material combinations; industrial steel and fibreglass with fluid, painterly surfaces. Colour is intrinsic to the sculptures’ physical presence and perception of their forms in space. They tend to include apertures, patterned and/or perforated surfaces, creating uncertain boundaries and physical entry points. Pieces manipulate levels of surface and information accessible from different angles and distances. Making is central to Tang’s practice, including epoxy ‘glassing’, metalwork, carving, modelling.
