Biography
Born in 1961 in Istanbul, Gonul Nuhoglu, is an installation artist whose work explores the political, social, and historical dimensions of space. With a career spanning over three decades, she has engaged in interdisciplinary collaborations encompassing historiography, politics, and sociology. Her site-specific installations serve as dialogues that examine spatial contradictions, utilizing materials ranging from industrial metals and fragile glass to cast resin and digital components.
Her artistic practice is conceptually driven, addressing themes such as belonging versus alienation, visibility versus absence, and the interplay between nature and the man-made. She believes in art's transformative power and its capacity to critically engage with contemporary issues. Her exhibitions, both in Turkey and internationally, are composed of works grouped around specific themes and concepts, employing a diverse range of media. These themes are frequently combined in her installations, creating a semantic bond between them.
Gonul Nuhoglu, has held numerous solo exhibitions in notable venues, including Hagia Irene; yerebatan Cistern in Istanbul and the Universal Lodge Hall in Washington DC. Her work has also been featured in various group exhibitions and art festivals across Europe and the United States.
In addition to her artistic endeavors, she has been actively involved in the art community. Since 1996, she has served on the board of the Association of Painting and Sculpture Museums, assuming the role of president in 2021. She is also a founding member of the Istanbul Art Foundation and has held positions such as General Secretary of the Istanbul Plastic Arts Association.
Her contributions to the field have been recognized with several awards, including the Achievement Award at the 16th Contemporary Artists Exhibition in Istanbul and the Special Prize at the Arte Laguna Prize in Italy. Her works are part of esteemed collections, such as the Istanbul Painting and Sculpture Museum and the Yinchuan Museum of Contemporary Art in China.
