Biography

Begbie discovered the properties of his medium, steelmesh, as a student literally inventing and developing a unique art form and visual language. He sets up a paradox by creating from this cold industrial material, delicate, sensual and powerful work that is completely contemporary, but which ultimately is timeless.

His sculptures are contemporary archetypal images creating figurative physical forms from steelmesh and stainless steel and using strategic lighting to create supremely optical compositions of line, form and projected shadow, each transparent sculpture has a greater palpable presence than the space which it occupies.

He has undertaken a number of site specific commissions, including the Natural History Museum, the Centre Court Building at Wimbledon and 170 rooms in the Radisson Edwardian Hotel opposite the O2 building in Docklands.  He exhibits in galleries throughout the UK, Europe, America, Canada and Australia and his work is held in many private, corporate and public collections.
