Biography
Luke trained as a stonemason before working on Winchester and Salisbury cathedrals. He went onto study stone carving at City and Guilds of London Art School before embarking on an MA in site-specific sculpture at Wimbledon Art School. He has worked in Pietrasanta, Italy, as well as completing landscape projects in Zimbabwe, Pakistan and India. He has exhibited widely in the UK and internationally.
In its purest form the transformation of the stone is a meditation. The rhythm of the hammer marking time. The time spent with the stone solidifies the idea in the mind as well as in actuality. And the completion lays the idea to rest. Luke is interested in rituals that bind us and offer opportunities of inner exploration. These periodically add patterns to his year and pulse to his work. Themes and forms reappear, as the stone continually exerts its influence over the desire to bring rhythm, fluidity and grace to an often stubborn material.
