Biography
Brian Alabaster MRSS is a Suffolk-based figurative sculptor specialising in life-size and larger-than-life bronze sculpture for public and private commissions. His work ranges from portraiture and family groups to commemorative sculpture and studies of the natural world.
Working directly from life wherever possible, Brian is particularly recognised for sculptures that capture the individuality, movement and character of his subjects. Many of his most celebrated works are inspired by children and family relationships, themes that have remained central throughout his career.
Unlike many contemporary sculptors, Brian undertakes every stage of the creative and production process himself in his own Suffolk studio and foundry. From the first clay sketches and welded armatures through mould making, bronze casting, metal finishing and patination, each sculpture is created under his direct supervision using traditional lost-wax casting techniques.
His public commissions include The First Step in Alperton, London, the Life-Size Hereford Bull in Hereford city centre, the Stanley Hollis VC Memorial in Middlesbrough, and other sculptures in public and private collections throughout the United Kingdom.
In 2026 Brian was announced as joint winner of the international County Hall Arts Mother & Son Sculpture Concours, leading to the commission for a major new bronze sculpture for permanent installation at the historic County Hall on London's South Bank.
As a Member of the Royal Society of Sculptors (MRSS), Brian continues to combine traditional craftsmanship with contemporary figurative sculpture, creating work that reflects both technical excellence and a deep understanding of the human form.
