Biography
Stonyer studied at Northampton School of Art, Loughborough College of Art, The Architectural Association and Leicester Polytechnic/ Slade School of Fine Art; the latter concluding with a PhD concerning the use of solar energy in kinetic sculpture. From 1994 – 2010 he was Professor in Fine Art at the University of Gloucestershire. He has taught, exhibited and completed commissions in Turkey, Holland, Canada and the USA. .
His sculpture is a search for patterns of actual and implied kinetic imagery that are hidden within the seemingly regular, and are always transcribed through the geometry of the circle and the square such as his Rotating Circle. This geometry is evident in kinetic sculptures such as Pulse that responds to the vibration of trains, and to sunlight through his Audio Kinetic Sculptures. Patterns of imagery in his kinetic sculptures are the basis for sculptures, such as Rotating Circle where movement is implied.
