Biography

My work is an exploration of material and process, allowing a conversation to emerge between the medium and myself.
This constant dialogue moulds my final structures and images, revealing the inherent contradictions in all things: the combination of fragility with strength, friction with playfulness, and the true force of femininity.

Often the use of the humble everyday item becomes part of the work. Small objects that appeal to me and seem insignificant to others, are manipulated and disguised within a larger sculpture, creating organic forms and textures from the manmade and mass-produced.

Play and experimentation lies at the root of my practise. However, each piece holds an underlying sense of foreboding, the dark edge of beauty.

Alice Freeman’s “work looks like biological artifacts that have been excavated from deep within the earth, matter that has formed by geological processes over eons of time… forms mantled in chromite black, gnarled and pitted draw you in with the attraction of a black hole. The blackness is devoid of life yet somehow these forms attest to an eternity of a life-giving cycle.” Afterview 2020
