Our Sculptors Exhibitions
The Old Parcels Office Artspace in Scarborough presents Deconstructed Cube Form, a new exhibition exploring the possibilities of geometry, movement and collaboration across two galleries. Running from 28th March to 19th April, the exhibition brings together new sculptural works by Paul Bonomini, and Member of the Royal Society of Sculptors and Chair of The London Group, alongside an installation created by students from Scarborough TEC.
In Gallery 1, Bonomini presents three sculptural works that take the cube — a form traditionally associated with stability and order — and open it up to transformation. Through fractured planes, shifting edges and the integration of movement and subtle sound, the works explore how solid structures can feel responsive and alive. Light, vibration and motion introduce a sense of impermanence, revealing geometry as something fluid rather than fixed.
Paul Bonomini said:
“I’m delighted to be returning to Scarborough to present this exhibition at the Old Parcels Office. It’s particularly exciting to show two new works alongside a piece originally created for an exhibition during the 2018 Venice Biennale. The space offers a wonderful setting to explore how sculpture, movement and sound can open up the cube into something more fragile and responsive.”
On the walls, Scarborough artist Sally Gorham presents large-scale installations of geometric paintings. The multi-part construction of the works enables them to be adapted and re-assembled in new situations, creating what Daniel Buren describes as an interdependence between the work and the site, subverting the notion of the autonomous art work.
In Gallery 2, students from Scarborough TEC respond to Bonomini’s work through the creation of a collaborative mixed-media installation. Their work embraces the idea that art is not the sole domain of artists but often emerges through collaboration between creative disciplines and specialist trades. Photographs taken by the students will be exhibited alongside the finished work to reveal the stages of experimentation, fabrication and teamwork behind the final piece.
Michael Roberts, Programme Leader for Art and Design at Scarborough TEC, said:
“This project provides a fantastic opportunity for our students to work collaboratively on an ambitious installation while responding to the work of an established sculptor. It allows them to combine creative thinking with technical skills, experiment with materials and scale, and gain valuable experience of exhibiting in a professional gallery environment.”
By bringing together the work of a nationally recognised sculptor and emerging creative practitioners, Deconstructed Cube Form highlights the shared language between art, design and making. Across both galleries, the exhibition invites visitors to consider how form can be constructed, deconstructed and reimagined through experimentation, collaboration and time.
