Our Sculptors Exhibitions
In the 16th century, the disinterred remains were carted to Finsbury Fields, heaped unceremoniously upon the ground and thinly covered with soil. This area was given a new name: Bone Hill, later Bunhill. Over the next two centuries, over 123,000 religious dissenters, intellectuals and radicals like William Blake, Daniel Defoe and John Bunyan were buried here. The cemetery became a public garden in 1869 and was later redesigned into today’s modern park. Bunhill Ward, now densely populated with few remaining greenspaces, takes its name from this historic site.
In 2022, Bunhill’s Community Infrastructure Levy funded Islington Heritage to deliver “Bunhill Heritage” project, reinterpreting the ward’s history through community-influenced art. This exhibition explores artists Georgie Fay, Jacky Oliver, and Jamie Turner’s inspirations, motivations, and methods in their own words, and debuts three new retrospective artworks.
