WHICH VALUES DOES THE SOUTH OFFER?
As part of the international program of Neo Norte 5.0 in the context of the Venice Biennale ‘Stranieri Ovunque’ (Strangers Everywhere), the first Biennale with a curator from the Global South, the Neo Norte arrives in Venice as an act of relational art. The action opens a space for participants interested in learning more about the art scene of Latin America and the Caribbean. The participatory action invites the community to recycle fabrics (26th August 26 – 23rd September 2024), which will then be used by the participants of the performance on the 28th September 2024, from 6 PM to 8 PM, at Spazio Zelda (Fondamenta San Sebastiano 2542, Venice, Italy) to strengthen the cultural values of the Global South as alternatives to face the chaotic times the world is experiencing
Neo Norte is a project by the Chilean curator and artist Tere Chad. The project is inspired by the ‘School of the South’ of the Uruguayan artist Joaquín Torres García, suggesting the South can become the New North. The project has been presented in four countries: Santiago, Chile (2018), London, United Kingdom (2019), Helsinki, Finland (2021), and Sicily, Italy (2023 - 2024), counting with the participation of over 80 artists and more than 565,600 visitors. Neo Norte 5.0 is being developed at the Memorial da América Latina in São Paulo, Brazil, between 2024-2025.
The action in Venice invites students, creatives, artists, and the general public to be part of an arts residency (24 – 29 September) which includes a reading group, an upcycling workshop, and a final performance. The performance features “the walk” as the central element, attempting to honour all the migrants from the Global South who abandon their countries every day. The performance uses a triangular shape, referencing not only the triangular form of the continents in the Global South, such as Latin America and Africa, but also the colonial Triangular Trade. The Triangular Trade which took place between the 16th to mid-19th century, consisted of transporting manufactured goods from Europe to Africa, deporting African slaves to the Americas who worked on the plantations, which allowed to export products from these plantations to Europe. The action highlights the amount of waste brought by tourists visiting the Venice Biennale by using upcycling. The action invites both participants and the audience to imagine a world where the South becomes the North, and to enhance the values that compose Latin America and the Caribbean identity.
The action is part of a series of performances, which will continue with ‘Samka Meets Neo Norte’ at the Bloomsbury Festival in London (18th – 19th October 2024). It will then proceed with a performance which will be part of the Neo Norte 5.0’s programme at the Memorial da América Laitna in São Paulo (date to be confirmed: October - November 2025) and will conclude in Palermo, Sicily (date to be confirmed: November 2025 – January 2026), connecting as well to Italian ‘diaspora’ in São Paulo.
