Biography

Fiona Haines is a researcher and sculptor whose work investigates how environments shape perception. She creates sculptural forms from transformed and reflective materials, reconstructing the notion of place and drawing out the subtle, often overlooked atmospheres of natural spaces. Her early experiments such as an accidental double exposure on a 35mm Pentax camera sparked a long-standing interest in layering, transformation and the fusion of colour, form and site, which now underpins her sculptural practice.

Her work is rooted in research and close observation, responding to the idiosyncrasies of specific environments in pursuit of their fugitive essence. This approach has been strengthened through three major residencies: a British Council research residency in Venice (2016) examining tidal fluctuation and Aqua Alta; a University of Oxford–funded residency at Wadham College (2016) exploring weather classification and fluid dynamics; and a prestigious Hauser & Wirth residency in California (2017), where she developed sculptures shaped by the region’s seismic undercurrents and geological instability.

Haines’ original career in health deeply informs her sculptural methodology. She approaches materials with clinical precision, adjusting reflective surfaces, colour and spatial alignment much like a clinician reading and responding to vital signs. Each sculpture is “titrated” through iterative refinements, achieving a balance where colour, order and fluidity coexist. The works shift subtly with light and viewpoint, encouraging viewers to engage with an environment that is always in motion and never fully fixed.

Collaboration also plays a meaningful role in her practice. In 2015 she co‑created Sonic Sulis for the Illuminate Festival, Bath; an interactive public artwork beside the Roman Baths where audience participation activated a live sound and lightscape, attracting over 20,000 visitors.

Born in Ireland and based in Bath, Haines holds a Distinction in Fine Art (MFA) from Bath Spa University and is a Member of the Royal Society of Sculptors. Her career includes a Chelsea Flower Show sculpture commission awarded a Gold Medal (2013), the Gane Travel Award to Iceland (2014) and the Porthleven Prize (2014).

She has exhibited nationally and internationally at venues including the Saatchi Gallery (London), the Royal Geographical Society (London), the Holburne Museum, Wells Art Contemporary, the RWA Bristol, Premier Vision Paris, the Venice Biennale and Mexico. Her works are held in significant collections including Fidelity International, Bath Spa University, Oxford Castle Collection, Hurel Paris and private collections worldwide.
