Our Sculptors

Stuart Williamson FRSS

For me, starting a new portrait is the beginning of a ‘journey’ which requires much preparation. A portrait sculpture as it unfolds physically and psychologically is all consuming. As well as a likeness, ultimately it must have ‘presence’.

I have produced a considerable number of historical portraits for well-known US Institutions, including Washington for Mount Vernon, Franklin for Constitution Centre, Philadelphia, Truman for the Truman Foundation and Jefferson for Monticello.

I have also sculpted the poet John Keats for Guys Hospital, London, and a bust of Walt Whitman for a Michigan client.

I taught sculpture to adults at Kensington Chelsea College in London for 3 years and later taught master classes in the USA, Hong Kong and South America. My instructional DVD on portrait sculpture, ‘From the Inside Out’ is available from my website.

The search for a sound structure that leaves me free to find and express the more important elements of portrait sculpture is the groundwork of my method.

I am also co-founder of the Portrait Sculptors Society of the Americas (PSSA).
