Biography
Robert Jones is a Manx sculptor working primarily in metal. He has had three solo exhibitions in the UK and Isle of Man, his work has been exhibited widely and he has pieces in the Isle of Arts Council collection and Manx Museum national collection.
Jones has been inspired by the strong heritage of sculpture in the Isle of Man, particularly through the work of Michael Sandle RA and Bryan Kneale RA. He is currently completing a documentary film sponsored by the Isle of Man Arts Council about the influence that Manx culture and landscape has had on the development of these sculptors.
Jones is also as a specialist in the restoration of traditional buildings, which has had a lasting effect on his practice as a sculptor. His sculpting career has developed alongside his building conservation work and has benefited from wide-ranging practical experience with construction, fabrication and logistics. Bringing together his restoration and sculptural skills, Jones also specialises in the maintenance and renovation of public sculptures.
Jones is passionate about making sculpture accessible to all, working with schools in the Isle of Man and the UK to give students practical skills to work with metal and confidence in their creativity.
Robert Jones’ work is heavily influenced by Manx nature, landscapes and industrial heritage and their juxtaposition, and he is deeply concerned about climate change. Wherever possible his work is made from discarded metal and other materials and he works to minimise his environmental impact. Recent pieces have been heavily influenced by the climate crisis and his hopes for a better future for the planet.
Jones has created pieces from small scale through to monumental outdoor fabrications and thrives on the challenge, inspiration and organic evolution that comes from working directly on his sculptures.
