Biography

An impression, a question, an idea, these are always, my starting points. Working with words, the title for the piece emerges, modelling and drawing the form emerges.
Complex volumes, fine edges and points, perfect curves, a hidden point of balance, come together creating a moment of silence. Layers of mark making provide a language, challenging the boundaries between surface and internal volume. The form is the signifier, the language informs a history, both past, and yet to be played out.
The resulting work expresses my findings and raises new questions.

In 2000 I established a large well equipped studio with sculptor Sally Fawkes. This versatile space enables me to undertake projects of notable scale as well as smaller, intimate private commissions.

Exhibiting internationally and creating site specific work for interior and exterior locations, my work is found in public, corporate and private collections worldwide. Collections include M.A.V.A., Madrid, Spain, Mastercard, London, National Museums of Scotland, V & A London.

All Things Being Equal II - Cast optical glass sculpture - H 725 mm We are all equal, but we are all different. A regular equal form, an equilateral triangle, expressed as a vertical column in pure optical glass. This form is then divided into three equal parts by linear surface carving, similar in feeling but individually worked by hand. Each one third section is further divided in two by carefully positioned uniquely different organic internal veils. All Things Being Equal is a fundamental contradiction, where free hand carved sits alongside regular geometric, and equal division is defined by free flowing organic movement. We are all equal, but we are all different. A regular equal form, with equal divisions, with further equal divisions of a different nature, all is the same but the differences are infinite. I believe there are many elements of life that are cyclical, but these cycles work with variance and change rather than repetition, they continually evolve, which means the cycles never return, they loop continuously. It follows then that the reason for us to “return” is to look for the new and learn from the differences, taking into account other life cycles that we may have produced and influenced, such as plastics, carbon and our environment and we need to examine our position within these cyclical events. The form of Returning Cycle is a physical exploration of this this concept. Returning Cycle has been made using the open cast method, which leaves you with one completely flat side, and then sculpted to give a form that works fully in the round. I have been working with and developing this method for nearly twenty years. Once the form is completed, there is a very lengthy process of mark making, engraving, surface working, polishing back and finally fully polishing. These different processes allow me to open up and obscure different views into and through the piece and bring a texture and language to the sculpture.
