Biography

Sasha Bowles is a London based multidisciplinary artist, working across mediums, including installation, painting, film and objects. Bowles creates artefacts and installations housed within provisional environments that are a means of storytelling but are not a narrative. Her practice is an evolving loop, dealing with theatrics, illusion, intervention, façade and metamorphosis. Often using as a jumping off point the baroque bravura of artifice; she immerses herself in theatrical and historical tropes encountered in houses of grandeur combined with the makeshift staging reminiscent of her childhood TV programs.

Creating a space and staging for the viewer to engage their imagination; you are asked to walk through a backdoor of theatricality and pass into hallways of reconstructed grandeur; peek behind the scenes of the façade and on occasions become a part of the Tableau Vivant. Through the appropriation of once familiar objects, paintings, interiors and ornaments. Using elements of the museum, the collection and display, Bowles mischievously rearranges and recontextualises opening up new interpretive possibilities.

Through the use of mostly black and white imagery, flimsy cardboard and photocopy paper. The viewer is encouraged to take a leap of the imagination and create their own narrative within these makeshift environments.
