Black Gold
Chris Williams is a sculptor working predominately in wood from sustainable and local sources. His workshop is based in the Rhondda, South Wales.
Chris has an interest in exploring the notion of landscape through his work. His responses consider both the post industrial landscape where he lives, a landscape of geography, culture and heritage, and the theoretical mathematical landscape of the cosmos.
Chris says:
"My 10gram sculpture is called Black Gold and is inspired by a pick axe head I unearthed in my back garden while digging it over.
Being based in the Rhondda, South Wales the pick axe is an iconic symbol being the main tool used in coal mining. This industry brought many people from all over the world for work and transformed both the landscape and culture of the area."
