Diagonal Line, 2024

Bernar Venet rose to prominence in the late Sixties through the avant-garde art scene in New York. He became instrumental in developing a radical new proposition involving the use of mathematics and scientific language alongside his contemporaries of the day.

Venet is best known for his sculptural work, particularly his focus on all variants of the line as a fundamental subject. Arcs, Angles and both Straight and Indeterminate Lines have come to define Venet’s aesthetic, with mathematical investigations of chance and chaos providing a conceptual grounding to how his sculptures are realised.

Based upon these principles this sculpture is a nod to the artist’s many space-defining installations, notably his 60-meter tall Arc Majeur in Belgium and his recent permanent installation timed with the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
