Biography

Andy was born and raised in Glasgow and graduated in 1986 with a BA Honours at the prestigious Glasgow School of Art. In 1987 he received his Postgraduate Studies diploma in Fine Art.

After graduating Andy founded Scott Associates Sculpture & Design Ltd with fellow graduates, undertaking projects across a diverse range of disciplines including prop-making, museum artefact restoration, interior design and architectural detailing and of course sculpture-making.

In 1996 he won a major public sculpture competition (‘The Heavy Horse’ in Glasgow) and his career subsequently focused solely on sculpture. In 2002 he successfully exhibited a sculpture for the annual outdoor exhibition ‘Sculpture by the Sea’ in Sydney which prompted Andy to open a studio in Australia which he operated in tandem with his Glasgow studio until 2008.

Many sculpture commissions followed, both in the UK and in Australia, but also in Ireland, Spain, The Netherlands and the USA.

In Spring 2014 “The Kelpies” were unveiled: a pair of 30 meter (100ft) tall horse heads in the Scottish town of Falkirk - the largest equine sculptures in the world.

They’ve earned Andy four Honorary Doctorates from leading UK Universities and Honorary Fellowships in the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland and the Ancient Guild of Hammermen in his native city of Glasgow.

That same year Andy and his manager wife, Dutch architect Hanneke Scott-van Wel, moved to the USA where they set up a sculpture studio in Philadelphia. Andy’s accolades continue: In 2017 he was awarded Citizen of the Year by the Chicago Scots and in 2019 he was awarded the Great Scot award by the National Trust for Scotland USA. He currently serves on their Board of Trustees.

In November of 2022 he received the Mark Twain Award from the St. Andrews Society of New York in recognition of his artworks and charitable activities.

Earlier that year Andy and Hanneke established a fully equipped sculpture studio in Los Angeles, California. They will continue to create striking landmark artworks ably assisted by their team and their head of security and site stick removal, rescue dog Baloo.
